A matter for all
Since its opening in 2013, La Maison d’hébergement pour femmes francophones et leurs dépendants victimes de violence conjugale et familiale, has hosted more than 135 children and Youth facing or experiencing domestic and family violence.
We have seen the traumatic consequences of being exposed to domestic and family violence on the development of children and Youth such as sleep and eating disorders, concentration disorders, behavioral disorders, and a break in the mother-child relationship.
The Child Witness Programs responds to the growing need to provide French services to children and adolescents in order to support them towards a new life without violence. It will take the form of sessions with front-line workers specialised in working with children and Youth who have been exposed to domestic violence. Its goal is to break the cycle of violence, to put words on what they have experienced and to restore dialogue between mothers and their children.
The 3 pillars of the program are:
- Hearing: In a warm and safe setting where children and mothers are able to share their feelings and experiences.
- Supporting: Workshops and Groups aimed at re-establishing family communication, to equip mothers to support their children.
- Guiding: Referrals and Guidance to appropriate Services and Resources in accordance with the children or families’ needs.
The first edition of the Benefit Cocktail which took place on November 25, 2016, enabled us to acquire the necessary funds to finance the launch of the pilot Child Witness Program at the end of the summer. However, the budgetary requirements of the program remain substantial and despite efforts in seeking funds, the current resources remain insufficient. It was therefore with the objective of raising these funds that La Maison decided to renew its fundraising event. The second edition of the Benefit Cocktail, aims to raise public awareness of the importance of these children and youth exposed to domestic and to obtain the necessary accompaniment in French in this difficult period of their lives.
The team is totally involved in organizing and promoting this event. In order to give this program every chance, we need your commitment and support today.
